Angela Carr

Biography

Angela Carr is the author of Ropewalk (Snare Books, 2006). Her recent project is a translation of the concordance to the Roman de la Rose of Guillaume de Lorris. Poet's Note

The project of translating an index to an epic allegorical poem. Repetition of keywords unfolding an emotional register — emotion shifted from line breaks to keyword repetition. The questions: to what poem is this a concordance, what is the original narrative? Very early on in the process, the concordance to the Roman de la Rose appears to the translator as a mist of artistic concerns. She loves its bawdy surface. Then the concordance is abandoned (the writer cannot access the library holding that book; the book is literally withheld) and imagined by the poet, indexing many possible original narratives.
